The 1969 Lola GT 70 is one of those early Redlines that perfectly captures what made the original Hot Wheels lineup so special.
Released as part of the new Grand Prix Series, the Lola GT 70 was based on the real Lola T70 Mk3B, a legendary British sports racing car. The full-size Lola T70 was built for serious competition and became especially famous in the Can-Am racing series, where Lola dominated much of the 1966 season.
Mattel’s 1/64 version was designed by Ira Gilford. One of the coolest features is the opening rear hatch, revealing a detailed metal engine underneath. The model was produced in both the United States and Hong Kong, with some noticeable differences between the two versions, including the glass and base construction.
The Lola GT 70 was released in a huge variety of Spectraflame colors, along with enamel versions. Some colors are considerably harder to find than others. The original cars also came with a sheet of yellow racing stripes and #10 decals that could be applied to the car.
And, of course, it wouldn’t be a 1969 Hot Wheels without those iconic Redline wheels.
The Lola GT 70 was produced from 1969 through 1971 and remains one of the standout racing designs from the early Redline era. Sleek, low, and built around a real racing legend, this little car has a lot of history packed into 70mm.
