Custom Firebird

The Custom Firebird, designed after the 1:1 1968 Pontiac Firebird, stands out as the sole custom in the 1968 lineup based on a convertible. It came in various body colors with different color interiors. All Firebirds featured small front wheels and medium-sized rear wheels.

Early production models of the Hong Kong version were equipped with deep-dish wheels. Mattel produced the Custom Firebird in both the U.S. and Hong Kong plants. U.S. cars have a clear windshield and three interior colors: white, dark brown, and champagne. In contrast, Hong Kong models had a slightly slimmer body and offered brown, gray, white, red, or blue interiors with typical contrasting black steering wheels. Initially, Hong Kong models were painted in red or blue, matching the interior colors, and many had blue-tinted windshields, although some early runs featured clear windshields.

A rare late-run casting variation for some U.S. Firebirds is the presence of door lines. This is possibly due to a slight modification of the die tool, foreshadowing the creation of the 1970 Light-My-Firebird casting as part of the "Spoilers" series.
